1878: The Railroad Reaches St. Helena

The railroad reached St. Helena in 1878, connecting the town to San Francisco and opening new markets for its wine, grain, and lumber. The depot on Main Street became the commercial heart of town — goods flowed out, visitors flowed in.

Rail service transformed St. Helena from an isolated agricultural settlement into a connected, thriving community. The depot building itself would stand for over a century as a landmark on Main Street.
