1853: The Founding of St. Helena

In 1853, Henry Still filed the original town plat that would become St. Helena. What began as a small settlement serving the surrounding farms and ranches of upper Napa Valley would grow into one of California’s most storied small towns.

The plat established the grid of streets that still defines downtown St. Helena today. Still’s vision was practical — a supply center for the agricultural valley — but the town he founded would take on a life far beyond his original plans.
